What are the different types of walk-in bathtubs?
The National Council on Aging regularly reviews walk-in tubs and identifies several types:
- A Soaker is a basic, economical choice with little more than space to sit and bathe.
- Hydrotherapy and Aerotherapy Tubs provide water and/or air jets to treat joints and muscles and to stimulate circulation in the legs of those living with diabetes.
- Wheelchair Accessible Tubs provide a large outward-swinging door and comply with standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Bariatic Tubs are designed for comfortable bathing for those weighing 300 pounds or more.
- Two Seaters accommodate a couple. Naturally, they are somewhat longer than other tubs.
- Walk-in Tub / Shower Combinations provide an overhead showerhead for those who are able to use it.
Accessible tubs can also be classified as “innies” or “outies” depending on which way the door swings. An outie improves accessiblilty, and wheelchair and bariatic tubs are of necessity outies. Innies require less space, and they also have an engineering advantage: the pressure of the water in the tub pushes the door closed and maintains the waterproof seal. On the other hand, this is disadvantageous in an emergency because the door can’t be opened until the water drains. For this reason, some tubs have two drains or other fast-draining features.
Whatever type you choose, our capable installers will install it precisely and make sure every feature works to your satisfaction!
